Listening to Ancestors: Ground-penetrating Radar in Residential School Landscapes

UBC's Laboratory of Archaeology (LOA) and Musqueam Indian Band (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm) co-developed a capacity in the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for locating unmarked graves in 2007. This work continues today including within the landscapes of former Indian Residential Schools. Our work emerged from a long history of relationships between xʷməθkʷəy̓əm and UBC archaeologists that date back to the 1940s. Over this time, the nature of our partnership has developed as we seek to understand how to frame an equitable partnership within asymmetrical relations. In this paper we present Musqueam perspectives on this relationship, reflect on IRS work undertaken in partnership with Penelakut Tribe, and consider the scholarship on the nature of uncertainty within archaeological logic that emerges from the GPR signals of Musqueam ancestors.

His work explores the relationships between Indigenous oral records and archaeology. His archaeological work focuses on spatial patterns in architecture and building chronologies with radiocarbon dates. Since 2006 he has been part of a joint UBC/Musqueam teaching project that developed a capacity for using GPR to locate unmarked burials. In 2014 he began working with the Penelakut to apply this technology to locating missing children at the Kuper Industrial School. He is grateful for these partnerships and for the guidance and leadership of survivors, their families, and their communities. Aviva Rathbone (Senior Archaeologist @Musqueam Indian Band) Aviva is a non-Indigenous archaeologist with family roots in Eastern Europe. Her 10+ years as a professional archaeologist in BC have been heavily focused on the de-colonization of heritage research and management, with particular interest in how heritage is defined, legislated, managed, and controlled in BC. In her role as Musqueam Indian Band’s Senior Archaeologist, she works with Musqueam community and leadership and with a team of Musqueam archaeologists who do the on-the ground work of protecting Musqueam’s title and rights and of returning colonial control of the management of Musqueam heritage resources to their rightful owners, the Musqueam peoples. Her work is heavily grounded in critical self-reflection, in teachings from her Musqueam mentors, and is informed by her queer and Jewish identity. Eric Simons (PhD student @Department of Anthropology, UBC) Eric is an anthropological archaeologist, primarily focused on the interplay between archaeology and contemporary peoples. I am undertaking PhD research to examine how archaeology may contribute to Canada's Truth and Reconciliation process, particularly through applied, community-driven archaeological investigation in Indian Residential School mortuary contexts. Alison Wylie (Professor @Department of Philosophy, UBC) Alison Wylie’s areas of specialization are philosophy of the social and historical sciences; feminist philosophy of science; history and philosophy of archaeology; ethics issues in the social sciences. Most fundamentally she is curious about how inquiry succeeds under non-ideal conditions, and how we can best adjudicate the knowledge claims we rely on. Her research is case-based, and focused on questions about the nature of evidence, ideals of objectivity, the role of values in science, and issues of accountability in science.
