Description
Marc Stevenson: Reconciliation! Really? The recent finding of hundreds of Indigenous children’s graves at residential schools across Canada has once again brought the issue of reconciliation to the fore. As before, the urgency of this matter is fading as issues more germane to the Canadian experience dominate the headlines. Unless we accept the challenge head-on right now — of creating real space in our existing institutions for Indigenous peoples — we can expect this trend to continue ad infinitum. I have spent most of my career as an archaeologist and anthropologist working with Indigenous Canadians in contexts that divest them of their knowledge, rights, lands/resources, and cultures. These include: wildlife co-management, environmental impact assessment, comprehensive land claims agreements, provincial land use planning, and cultural resource management I share in this talk both my and their experiences by way of personal anecdotes and their voice. A more comprehensive review of these issues, however, can be obtained in my recent book "Do You Eat the Red Ones Last? Canada’s Not-so Clandestine War to Expropriate Indigenous Lands and Resources: An Anthropologist's Curious Journey Through Mind-Fields of Indigenous Knowledge, Rights and Cultures" (perhaps the longest book title ever). Relying on knowledge and wisdom passed on to me by Indigenous elders and land-users, I conclude with discussions of the true nature of Indigenous Knowledge and Aboriginal Title -- two key issues that will likely dominate Indigenous-non-Indigenous relations in Canada for the foreseeable future.
